Hay War Memorial High School Dorper Success

The Southern Region members, Hay War Memorial High School (Amberline Dorpers & White Dorpers) have found success in the show ring this year. Teacher Amber Sargent, and her students have been awarded the Supreme Dorper Exhibit at this year's Royal Melbourne Show, with their Dorper Ewe (Donated by Dell Dorpers). The school's first appearance was at this years Australian Sheep & Wool Show, Bendigo. The students must be commended for there professionalism and good behavior at these events. Well done! It is fantastic for the breed and the DSSA to have schools as part of the membership and we again thank all the studs who have donated sheep to the Hay Memorial High School, and helped kick start their stud.

Landmark NSW Sheep Show/Dubbo Show Report for 2011

Another very successful show was held this year with the quality of the breed improving.

Mr David Curtis from ‘Bellevue’ Millmerran, QLD was the First Aussie to Judge at the Dubbo Show and the feedback was he did an excellent job.

There were 203 Dorpers / White Dorpers entered this year with a total of 16 Studs exhibiting.

The Most Successful White Dorper Exhibitor was Terraweena, who also became the 2nd Most Successful Exhibitors in the whole Dubbo Show Sheep Pavilion, and Amarula Dorpers were the Most Successful Dorper Exhibitor.

The Supreme White Dorper Exhibit was won by a Highveld ewe lamb beating the Highveld Grand Champion White Dorper Ram.

The Supreme Dorper Exhibit was won by a Global Ram. The ram beat the Grand Champion ewe exhibited by Dell Dorpers.

Champion Dorper Group of a ram and two ewe lambs was won by Bilgamma Dorper Stud with Reserve Champion group going to Whynot Dorper Stud.

The up and Coming new stud award was won by global Genetics for a successful first show.

And from the Judge.....

It was a pleasure to Judge at Dubbo. All studs are improving the quality of their sheep and this is being reflected by the ribbons being shared around the studs. The breeders have all focused on improving feet and leg structure in their stud animals with very few relegated to pen two for faults. It was interesting to have some sheep in the ring with their tails not docked and I have no problem with this. As the Dorper is marketed as the easy care breed I believe tail docking is unnecessary and should be phased out over time.

The show ring provides an opportunity for the breed to be showcased to the wider public and the studs should be congratulated for taking the time and effort to do this. I would also like to thank Mel Pagett for assisting in the role of Steward and for so capably organising the Show. The friendship and willingness of the participating studs to assist each other in any way, was a standout feature of the event.

Regards
David

Inaugural Queensland Dorper and White Dorper Sale 2011

After a very wet start to the year (and the postponement of the original date set), the inaugural St George Dorper and White Dorper sale, hosted by the Queensland branch of the Dorper Sheep Society of Australia Inc. was held at the St George Showgrounds on March 19, 2011. All animals offered at the sale were eligible to be registered with the DSSA, however the aim of the sale was to present good quality commercial stock to breeders of prime lambs.
